Mike McGee... YES REALLY! MIKE MCGEE, CHECK OUT THE RUKUS HE CAUSED WHEN HE LAST VISITED US:
Mike McGee is a well-traveled funny poet from San José, California. He has been a force in the Bay Area spoken word scene since 1999. His reach expanded internationally after winning the 2003 National Poetry Slam Grand Championship. McGee soon after embarked on an international poetry and comedy tour, which has taken him all over Europe, Canada and the U.S. He has become a favorite performer to many schools around the U.S. and was one of the first Americans to perform at the University of Paris (La Sorbonne) and Glastonbury, the largest music festival in the world.
He'll be presenting WordShop at 6:30 PM and a full feature set after the Open Mic!
Tuesday also marks NYC-Urbana's Fourth Quarter Semifinal Slam!

May Day May Day May Day!!!! We welcome you once again to the annual supershow that is THUNDERSLAM!!!! (cue the Tina Turner)

This may be the most awesome poetry slam you ever go to. Scratch that. It will be! TWO POETS ENTER, ONE POET LEAVES!!! Bring your best poems, your hardest poems, you widest array of poems, because at Thunderslam, you better be versatile!
Here’s how it works!
One poet will start the evening proper. The first poet to take the stage will pose “The Boast!”
Boast: “I am the greatest love poet that ever walked the earth”.
Next they will make the “The Brag”
Brag: “I am such a profound love poet, upon hearing my love poetry, butterflies charge head first into wall so that they may ascend to heaven and god may use their wings to wipe his tears”
And Finally “The Wager”
Wager: “I am such a profound love poet, I will wager this Spongebob Basketball against any who think they are a greater love poet than I.
Now at this point any poet who thinks they are a better love poet can challenge the Boast with “The Denoucement”
Denouncement: “You are not the greatest love poet ever”
Followed by “The Dis”
Dis: “You are such a horrific love poet, butterflies run head first into walls because the frequency of your words disrupts their flight patterns and cause them to suffer
And then the Counter Wager
Counter: I will take your challenge and wager this Billy Idol Rebel Yell Album.
Both poets will read and be voted on by three members of the audience. The best poet will continue to stay in Thunderslam and make a new best _____ poet wager. Seriously it’s awesome! You just have to come! And bring prizes, lots of them. We love side bets and poets who have the moxy to stand up to a real challenge! So Welcome to ThunderSlam, You’ll never experience anything like this!
Thunderslam! Will start with a good old fashioned open mic than anyone can read at. It’s gonna be a full night!!! Bring 100 friends. And don’t forget to bring prizes. Anything you’re willing to wager….even your shirt!!! (I already own a few and I’m looking to fill my closet) MASTERBLASTER RUNS BARTERTOWN!!!!

Mindy Nettifee is Pushcart Prize nominated writer and accomplished performance poet. She has competed in five National Poetry Slams, toured hundreds of venues across America and Europe, opened for indie rock acts the Cold War Kids and Meiko, and curated poetry events for the Smithsonian Project, the Visions Voices Festival, GirlFest Hawaii and more. She is the author of Sleepyhead Assassins (Moon Tide Press) and Rise of the Trust Fall (Write Bloody Press) and is the current director of the nonprofit Write Now Poetry Society, a national organization working to build the audience for great poetry (writenowpoets.org).

Last week we got a schoolin' from BILLY TUGGLE on HIP HOP culture and how it has influenced poetry and more importantly his own work. He went on to give us a first hand demonstration in a fantastic feature set. In a monster OPEN SLAM, JARED SINGER comes away with the win and will be joining us in the 4th QUARTER's SEMI FINAL!

This week! MAYA HERSH:
Maya Hersh is a two time member of the Seattle Slam team, has been featured on NPR and CBS, and at venues across the United States and Canada. Originally from the East Coast, she once spent a month and a half on a greyhound bus and ended up in Seattle because she couldn't bear to leave the rain behind. She has competed multiple years in the National Poetry Slam, the Individual World Poetry Slam and the Women of the World Poetry Slam, has been published in Pangaia magazine, and has self published four chapbooks and a CD.

We had JAMAAL MAY stop by last week to make us all feel bad about the progress of our careers as poets. Seriously, the man is simply brilliant.
